And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. - Colossians 3:17

In the verses following the above anchor, Paul starts a list of life vocations. His intent is to show how a person can live a thankful life in the name of the Lord no matter what their position is in life.

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. - Colossians 3:18

This scripture is not a popular in the world today, but it is not man’s opinion, it is the word of God. Therefore, we should listen.

God created man first, and then made woman out of man. She was made from his rib to be at his side a helper mete (or fitting) for him. This does not mean that the husband is the overlord of the house. We will deal with that in the next post. It means that the family needs one head that is answerable to God, not two that argue all the time.

The text does not make women second class citizens. This submission is not to all men but only to her own husband in the family. Even within this relationship, the opinions of the wife matter and should wisely be considered by the husband since they are heirs together of the grace of life.

Paul, in the previous verse, says that we are to say and do all things in the name of the Lord. Here, he says “as it is fit in the Lord.” This means at least two things. First, it means that God designed it this way, so it is right, proper, and fitting. Secondly, it means that she is submissive to her husband as long as it is not contrary to the will of God. She must obey God first.

God designed and created everything in the universe including humans. So, shouldn’t we think that He knows how best His design works?
