The Prophecy of Enoch

26 April 2014

And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, 15 to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” (Jude 14,15)
complaints

Enoch had a spirit of prophecy. He called his son Methuselah which signified that God would destroy the world in his generation. Jude is not quoting from a spurious book but speaks from tradition. In so doing, he declares this oral tradition of Enoch’s prophecy to be true.
In his prophecy, Enoch tells of the second coming of Christ at the end of time. Jesus will return with the souls of all the saints of God to reunite them with their now glorified bodies in the resurrection. The saints will come with Jesus but He is the Righteous Judge Who will condemn the wicked.

“To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.” (1 Thessalonians 3:13)

Jude uses a four-fold statement of the word “ungodly” to hammer home the idea of how bad the wicked truly are in the sight of a Holy God. The ungodly wicked do ungodly works in an ungodly way, and add to their condemnation ungodly speech against God! Jude says there will be no doubt of their guilt because they practice their sin openly and unashamedly.

“These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage.” (Jude 16)

Jude concludes his evidence against the wicked by giving a few characteristics that are peculiar to the wicked. They murmur and complain against God, authority, and His ministers. John Gill says they are “grunting out their murmurs like swine.” They murmur against all others while they spew out their mouths trying to boast of their personal knowledge and wisdom. They do speak well of some but only for personal gain of fame or wealth. They are like “yes-men” to evil politicians.
