Can God Learn?
4 May 2014
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
How does an all-knowing God learn? How can God become more wise?
There are two common explanations for this passage.
One opinion teaches that Jesus limited His own knowledge while here on earth and was taught of the Father as He grew. Those who hold to this position point to passages such as Matthew 24 for proof.
“But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” (Matthew 24:36)
Here, it would seem that God the Father knows something that God the Son does not.
I think this opinion requires too much speculation on limited information.
A more plausible explanation is that Luke tells us something about how men observed Jesus during His life. From the perspective of others, Jesus grew physically and mentally albeit His wisdom appeared to increase much faster than normal. Again, this is from man's perspective. It would seem that Jesus showedgrowth in wisdom by revealing more and more intelligence as He got older.
Men began to love Him early on for His beautiful teachings. Every action He made on earth pleased His Heavenly Father. The Father's favor showed forth to witnesses who saw Jesus do more and greater things every day.
