You Are Going To Love Something
11 November 2014
"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” (1st John 2:15-17)
Just like God views sin in absolute terms, our love and devotion to God cannot be mixed with a love of the world. Jesus Himself said that no man CAN serve two masters. If we try to hold the Lord with one hand and the world with the other, we are loving the world.
The world's philosophy, “if it feels good, do it,” has no place in discipleship. Our service to God should not be based on feelings or pleasure. It should be based on thankfulness.
We should continually compare the opinions of man to the absolute morals of the Bible. Men’s opinions change continually but God’s standard is eternally constant. Fornication was a sin 6,000 years ago and it is still a sin today. Men may call it an “extramarital affair”, but God calls it adultery and it is a sin. Murder was a sin 6,000 years ago and is still sin today. Men may call it abortion or mercy killing, but God calls it murder and it is a sin.
There are many things that man calls good that God calls bad. This is proof of the evil that is in men and the world.
John reminds us that there is a desire in us that is different than the desire of the world. He tells us to embrace that hunger for righteousness. We are going to live with God forever because of His grace. So why not start living with Him now?
