How Do We Know That It Is Jesus We Know?

"And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him." (1st John 2:3-5)
People worship many things and devote themselves to people, objects, or ideals without really knowing much about the object of their devotion. This is extremely dangerous. A person could be completely devoted to something very evil without knowing it.
So, how do we KNOW that it is Jesus that we know, love, and worship?
John tells us that it is actually pretty easy to tell. If we keep His commandments then it is Jesus that we fellowship. If we are not obeying His commandments then we are in fellowship with something or someone else.
Remember also that John when referring to the commandments of Christ draws it together with loving God by loving others. This means we KNOW it is Jesus we fellowship if our lives look like the life of Jesus!
We cannot make the love of God more perfect than it already is. He loves His people with an everlasting and perfect love. But we can experience the perfection of that love when we walk in fellowship with Him.
