The Salt Of The Earth

16 March 2015

"Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men." (Matthew 5:13)

Salt has two main characteristics, savor and preservative. Jesus speaks of the former but in a way that encompasses both. The savor of the elect of God in the earth is what God enjoys about His creation and continues to preserve it. The presence of the people of God acting righteously in a community brings the blessings of God upon it. Their absence, or their neglect of good works, brings the opposite.

Genesis 18 records Abraham pleading for Sodom to not be destroyed. If there had been as many as ten righteous people in the city, it would have been spared.

Can we not see this principle still applies today? The problems in America cannot be blamed on the wicked acting wickedly. The problem is that God's people are not being the salt of the earth that God made them. If the elect of God are not going to be a positive influence on society, who will?

The solution to the ills of our society are not solved in Washington or any state Capitol. The solution begins in each Christian home when they decide to serve God with their whole heart. Each one then brings that devotion to public worship. The church then changes the world!

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2nd Chronicles 7:14)
