Fulfilling the Law

23 March 2015

"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." (Matthew 5:17-18)

Jesus is both the author and subject of the entire Bible. Therefore, His ministry and redemptive work could never have been in contradiction to the law or the prophets.

"For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect." (Hebrews 10:1)

The law was a shadow or a basic outline of the redemptive work necessary for salvation and the pure and Holy character of God.

The rituals of the ceremonial law all pointed to the work of Christ. And Jesus "fully-filled" in the details and requirements as the perfect sacrifice as the Lamb of God.

Jesus also followed the moral law to the smallest detail. What we could not do because of our inherited sinful nature, Jesus perfectly fulfilled. The Apostle Paul shows us how Christ's perfect life is of the greatest benefit to us.

"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." (2nd Corinthians 5:21)

The sins of all the elect of God were counted to Jesus and He died for them so we would not have to. Therefore, when we stand before the judgment at the end of time, we will not have our good and bad works set in a balance to see if we deserve heaven. First of all, our righteousness is as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). Secondly, as we have just seen, Christ died for our sins so they cannot be laid to our charge.

We will have the blessing of heaven because Jesus DID live the perfect life. Jesus DID fulfill the law. We will live in glory because the righteous life of Jesus will counted to us!
