"All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:37-40)

Jesus declares here that all the elect will come to Him. This means that they will come, but how?

Does it mean that all will come and make confession and therefore persevere to the end? If that is the case, then where was the faith of the disciples in the storm tossed ship? Jesus rebuked them for not having faith. Will we lose our salvation and not enter glory because of our lack of faith? No, just like the example of the storm at sea, our salvation is based on God’s power and faithfulness, not ours.

We must read the verses following to see what Jesus really means. All the elect will come to Him in the resurrection. And Jesus is the One Who will be active in raising us from the dead. The statements regarding seeing the Son and believing are not the causes of the coming. They are the evidence. And the key is that “whosoever” shows these evidences is included. It is not for the Jews only. Neither is it for those who hold to a certain doctrine or creed. Our faith is the evidence not the cause of salvation. Jesus is the cause and power. It was based solely on His power and will being one with the Father.

Some will say that they agree with this but the sinner must first come to Christ to make it effectual for himself. Jesus anticipated this heresy and said these words.

"No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:44)

All the elect will come to Jesus in the new birth as well but that is not by their power or will either. It is by God’s sovereign work. They are drawn like water from a well. God is not wooing them with the gospel hoping they will accept and be saved.

God has decreed that all the elect will be with Him forever. Therefore, He draws them in the new birth and brings them to glory in the resurrection.
