Romans 1:1-4 The Dual Nature of Jesus

12 December 2016

“Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:” (Romans 1:1-4)

It never ceases to amaze me how much the Bible says which so few words.

In this opening statement, Paul declares some foundational truths about Jesus Christ.

First, Jesus was made of the seed of David. This means He truly was in the flesh and born of a woman. But the very next phrase tells us that is not when Jesus began being the Son of God.

He was declared to be the Son of God when He rose from the dead. This means He was the Son of God before.

The dual nature of Jesus is a mystery but it is the truth nonetheless. Jesus was 100% God and 100% man at the same time.

John said it this way:
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

He was made flesh when He came into the world but has always been the Son of God. Jesus is the Eternal Son of the Eternal Father.
