Romans 1:5 Obedience To The Faith

13 December 2016

“By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:” (Romans 1:5)

The modern ecuminical movement, where everyone can hold their own doctrine or position on scripture, would never have been tolerated by the Apostle Paul.

In fact, in the first letter to the church at Corinth, Paul declared that their divisions over doctrine had actually so corrupted the communion service that Paul no longer recognized it as the Lord’s Supper.

Paul was given the position of Apostle so that he could deliver to the early church the set of core doctrines about Jesus Christ and salvation that should be taught until Jesus returns.

This is what Paul means by “obedience to the faith.” “The faith” is that core set of foundational doctrinal principles that the church should hold as truth and teach until the Lord returns.

Jude called this “the faith once delivered to the saints.” It was delivered in its entirety once, during the time of the Apostles in the first century. Therefore, we Christians are not at liberty to just believe whatever we want to. We should seek to honor God in the highest way possible, and that includes believing the doctrines that give God ALL the glory.

That doctrine is - grace plus nothing.
