Romans 1:16-17 Faith To Faith
21 December 2016
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.” (Romans 1:16-17)
The gospel is a God-centric DECLARATION.
A declaration does not cause something to happen. It reports the joyful news of what has already been done!
The gospel is the power to save those who already believe. To save them to a productive, God-glorifying life in the here and now.
There are at least two plausible definitions of what Paul means by “from faith to faith.”
1. The preaching of the gospel is God's method of growing our faith from one degree to a greater degree of fruitfulness.
2. The preacher and the hearer must both have faith. If this is the case, it was not the gospel that gave the faith. Therefore, the gospel did not cause the new birth. I think this is what Paul has in mind here. It best fits the phrase he states just a few verses before this - “comforted together with you by the mutual faith.”
