Daily Devotional 11/17/16 - The Futility of Human Wisdom
17 November 2016
”Behold, the Lord rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it. And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom. And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards. And the Egyptians will I give over into the hand of a cruel lord; and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts.” (Isaiah 19:1-4)
After the death of Sethon, its last empire king, the nation of Egypt was divided under 12 provincial leaders who followed various philosophies and gods. This confederacy lasted only about 15 years and then split into 36 divisions. All of these warred against one another. The kingdom crumbled from within. It was not necessary for a foreign invasion to bring it down.
The strength of Egypt has historically been recognized in its wisdom and education. Under the judgment of God, Isaiah says it will become so chaotic that they will turn from logic and wisdom to seeking advice from false gods and soothsayers.
The STRENGTH of Egypt will be in fear when this happens.
This judgment will come swiftly like a s small cloud quickly going across the sky. They will not see it looming for years. God will come upon them suddenly.
Whether we are talking about a nation, a business, a church or an individual, the importance of proper education and wise counsel cannot be taken lightly.
Egypt had become a country quite comfortable in its self-sufficiency. Yet they find themselves facing the judgment of God. To trust in human potential without God is a futile effort. When God moves against such a nation, or individual, that wisdom will fail and that trust will be proven worthless.
Any god other than the true God quivers and melts at the power of the Lord. Whatever we devote the most time to is our god. If it is not Jesus that occupies our devotion, then we set ourselves up for disappointment.
One of the clear examples of God’s judgment against such behavior is internal tension in a nation or organization. When God withdraws all wisdom, the pride of man will not listen to truth and reason. This conflict will eventually lead to ruin even without an attack from an enemy. Choosing to ignore God, we become our own worst enemy.
The child of God, while seeking the best education for himself, should not be fooled into thinking everything he hears is truth. All things heard or seen should be compared to scripture.
Any exploration, even just curiosity, into the dark arts of witchcraft is dangerous!
Trust the Lord and His word!
