“And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.” (Luke 10:31)

Church is just too inconvenient.

I can’t sleep late. It gets in the way of the start of the football games at noon. The best tee times at the golf course are Sunday morning. It takes too much time out of my busy schedule. If I take the time to help someone in need, I’ll be late for work.

And there are many other “excuses” that people give for not regularly attending worship service or helping those in need.

The first person to come upon the man left for dead on the road to Jericho is a priest. The Jews had a rotation of 24 priests that served in the Temple and then returned home after their work was finished. This priest had considered his religious duties to be complete when he finished his course. He was headed home. His work was done. He saw no need to help the man because he had already fulfilled his religious obligations.

Church should not be something that we just check off the list to ease our conscience. Sunday is called “the Lord’s Day” in the Bible for a reason. It is the day that Jesus rose from the dead for our justification. We should devote the entire day to the worship of our Redeemer.


With a proper worship attitude, we will find it more “convenient” to help those in need when we come across them during the remainder of the week.

Our Christianity needs to be more than just fulfilling an obligation when it is convenient for us to do so. Jesus Christ gave His life for us. Therefore, we ought to sacrifice ourselves for the benefit of others.
