"Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work." (2nd Thessalonians 2:15-17)

In response to the blessings of God in timely gospel salvation and belief, Paul calls on the young church to live lives of holiness.

He reminds them that their worship and daily lives should contain the teachings he delivered to them. They are not free to add the philosophies of men to these doctrines. Nor are they permitted to neglect parts of Paul's teachings because the winds of culture had changed or the doctrines had become unpopular.

Part of that doctrine is beautifully explained by Paul here. God had given them an EVERLASTING consolation and GOOD hope. Their eternal salvation was secure in the finished work of Jesus Christ therefore it is everlasting and good.

Therefore, we are not to good works in order to gain eternal salvation. In response to the effect of sovereign grace, we are to joyfully want to follow in the steps of Jesus.
