"And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers." (Acts 2:42)

When you think of prayer, what comes to mind?

Did you memorize prayers as a child or as part of a religious service? Is it something you only do when you are in distress? Do you see prayer as something a church leader does well but you will never be able to use such flowing language?

Can I tell you a something? Prayer is not defined by any of these preconceived notions.

James Montgomery put it well in his hymn "Prayer is the Soul's Sincere Desire." He said:

"Prayer is the Christian’s vital breath, The Christian’s native air;"

Prayer is a conversation with our Heavenly Father. There is no special language or man-made pattern to follow. We don't need fancy words or eloquent phrases. We are not speaking to be heard of men. We are going to the foot of the throne of the King of kings Who also happens to be our Daddy!

There is a sweet story I heard once when a young preacher dragged on and on with tired old repetitious lines in a prayer when he was interrupted by a dear sweet Sister who said, "You don't need all that. Just call Him Daddy and ask Him for something."

Our prayer lives need continual improvement both privately and as a church body. This is our very breath, it is our duty, and it is also our privilege to Ask God for help in time of need.
