The Hem of His Garment

21 November 2015

Over the course of this past week, I have tried to give a summary of the warnings in the prophecy of Malachi. In this we have found that modern Christians are in the same poor shape that Israel was 400 years before the Messiah came to earth. We saw that our only hope is in the sovereign grace and love of God who does not change and has mercy on His children.

With these teachings in mind. May I submit to you a possible interpretation of the following text?

"But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings;” (Malachi 4:2a)

There is no scriptural record of Jesus having wings, either here on earth or in the glorious visions that John had in Revelation. With that in mind, I did a little word study on the Hebrew word translated “wings.” It literally means edge or border. It is translated as such in several places including the description of the borders or hems of the garments the children of Israel were to adorn to honor God.

Now, consider the following text:

"And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: 21 for she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.” (Matthew 9:21-21)

Is it possible that the religious leaders of the day had blinded themselves so badly that they could not recognize the Messiah when He performed wondrous miracles right in front of them, and yet this poor woman, who feared God, found hope in the prophecy of Malachi? She knew that the ways of men had failed her but she could find healing in the wings (hem) of Jesus garment.

The Lord knows them that are His. He is able to discern who fears and serves Him from those that give an outward show of religion. If you are one of those that truly fears the Lord and seeks His healing, then just reach out and touch the hem of His garment.
